A Jan. 5 report by Fire Marshall Jimmy Teem explained that on Jan. 4, Clarks Chapel Fire and Rescue responded to a fully involved structure fire on Prentiss Bridge Road at 6:03 p.m. They were assisted by Franklin and Otto Fire and Rescue Departments and Macon County EMS.

Two deceased victims, Nathaniel and Irene Witherspoon, were located inside the structure, which along with two vehicles was completely destroyed.

A FIRE on Prentiss Bridge Road that claimed the life of two people is under investigation.

According to a report offered by the Macon County Sheriff’s Department, firefighters, “swiftly responded, battling intense flames for several hours, and managed to contain and extinguish the fire.”

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by this devastating fire,” said Sheriff Brent Holbrooks. “Our dedicated firefighters worked diligently to control the blaze and provide assistance as we worked the scene. We will collaborate with the State Bureau of Investigation to thoroughly investigate the incident and ascertain the root cause.”

An investigation is currently underway, conducted by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, and the Macon County Fire Marshal’s Office.
