Individuals and families experiencing food insecurity may think that they can only qualify for assistance if they shop for fresh produce at chain grocery stores.

First of all, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) payments are accepted at the Macon County Farmers Market. Instructions are provided on the website. Plus, because of a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, the Macon County Farmers Market will double any SNAP/EBT dollars spent at exhibitor booths. This program is aptly called Double Snap.
Finally, explained Marketing Manager Devon Dupuis, a local nonprofit’s (who remains anonymous) donation of $30,000 enables leftover perishable produce to be purchased each week and donated to Macon County CareNet to feed food-insecure families. The Produce Purchase Guarantee program is in place for the 2024 season of the Macon County Farmers Market in front of the Gazebo in Franklin, which runs through November and is not to be confused with the year-round Franklin Farmers Market on Palmer Street.
