For the 11th year, ‘80s Flashback Weekend brought the 1980s era back to Franklin, while also raising money for the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville, S.C. The two-day event is arguably the most immersive fundraiser in Western North Carolina. Macon County Organizer Dave Linn created the Flashback Weekend because of his experiences with the hospital and to help Macon County families in need.
For an entire week, Franklin residents and visitors relive all things 1980s-related. Starting with the Miss ‘80s Something pageant, the fundraising extravaganza culminated with a weekend of concerts, a parade and a 5K race. This year’s event was bigger than ever with more food trucks, breweries, a Kids’ Zone, and festivities for all ages. On Friday, August 1, a crowd on Main Street enjoyed music from Carbon Harry and Bad Medicine, a Bon Jovi cover band.
Saturday started with a record attendance 5k walk/run race boasting 161 runners, nearly doubling 2024’s numbers. That afternoon, the annual ‘80s-themed parade on Main Street was followed by opener Corey Stuart and returning ‘80s cover band “80z Nation.”
While total donations were being tallied at press time, Linn shared that the event was the most attended in its history. “Last year we donated $34,000 to the Shriners Children’s Hospital. We want to give at least that much this year, hopefully more.” Donations are still being accepted; email [email protected]. All proceeds raised go to the hospital.
