The profound words of our nation’s Pledge of Allegiance ring true in the hearts of Americans from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Other than the prepositional phrase “under God,” I have always loved the very last phrase— “with liberty and justice for all.”
The sad reality is that all Americans do not enjoy liberty and justice. As a matter of fact, many are murdered without anyone advocating for them or even acknowledging their existence. Those who are murdered on a daily basis are murdered in the wombs of their mothers.
Since abortion was legalized in the United States in 1973, over 60 million Americans have been murdered before they had seen the light of day. Every time a woman has a surgical abortion or takes the chemical abortion pill, another American is murdered.
If our laws were consistent, then those who murder babies in the womb would be arrested and go to trial on first-degree murder charges. Instead, they are celebrated and lauded for their courage and strength. And, it’s called “healthcare”!
Scripture is clear that what is in the womb is a human being deserving of the full rights that other human beings enjoy. In Psalm 139:13-16, the Bible teaches that it is God who made us in the wombs of our mothers.
He intentionally and purposefully created us to reflect His glory. The Bible is clear that from the moment of conception to natural death, all human lives should be honored and protected. The only way to give value to the unborn and offer them the protection that other human beings enjoy under the law is to offer them equal justice. Giving the unborn equal justice means that when they are murdered, the one who murdered them is punished accordingly.
If I murdered someone who is walking down the street, I would be arrested and tried. The only way to give the unborn equal justice is to arrest and try those who murder them by abortion.
So, if we’re going to be intellectually honest, murder is murder whether it’s a man on the street or a baby in the womb. The abortionist, the father of the baby, if he is complicit, and the mother of the baby, if she is not coerced and is complicit, would all three be arrested and tried on charges of first-degree murder. That is what actual equal justice would look like.
Seeing it any other way would be intellectually dishonest, morally bankrupt and would not “follow the science.”
Now, all that said, don’t take this as some ironic Jonathan Swift-style argument. In no way am I making “A Modest Proposal” just to make a point. If murder is murder, then justice must apply to all. Period. Is this my preference? Actually no. My preference is that we live according to the scripture. Stop pre-marital sex. Stop deviant behaviors. Take seriously our relationships and love, and all the risks that come with playing loose and fast with the rules of life.
A good government answer
In the North Carolina legislature, House Bill 1232 has been introduced. The bill eloquently and truthfully defines the unborn, from fertilization, as deserving of protection under the law. The language of the bill simply categorizes the unborn as human beings who deserve to be protected and honored.
“An act to amend the North Carolina constitution to declare that a distinct and separate human life begins at the moment of fertilization and shall be held inviolate as an individual person and protected by the laws of this state from the moment of fertilization until natural death, so long as that person is not convicted of a capital offense.”
Human beings in the womb will never have the right to live if their murderers are not punished. I pray you will join with me in contacting our local representatives as we advocate for this bill and others like it.
You have agency and responsibilities. Don’t take that lightly. Be moral and good, and live by scripture.
In the end, we can never claim to be a morally good or just society until we offer “liberty and justice for all.” Abortion is never necessary and is always avoidable. It is not justice for the unborn.
