The United States of America differs profoundly from every other country. No other country of such a population can boast the freedom, ideology, and prosperity of America.
The America l grew up in differs from the America my parents grew up in. Every generation has a different perception of America, and therefore a different plan to better it. Since its beginning people have tried their hardest to better America as a nation.
All this effort begs the question, what did America mean to them, and for this writing, what does America mean to me?
To answer this, I believe it is best to look to history. America is no stranger to war. Since its beginning men and women alike have fought and died for the longevity and success of the country. Their bravery is direct evidence that America is defined by its freedoms, which are worth fighting for, and not to be taken for granted.
During the westward expansion of the 19th century, many European immigrants would travel the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail. They did this in hopes of finding rich fertile farmland, to secure their wealth and freedom. In my opinion, these pioneers show the true spirit of the American Dream. Many of them would show that prosperity is achievable through hard work, for anyone, from any background.
These historical recounts lead me to believe that America is a land of equal opportunity, and freedom. Worthy of its great sacrifice, and destined to be free. That is what America means to me.
