Beware the Trump Accounts

Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor

The first “Trump Account” commercial appeared on the pregame Super Bowl show back in February. The following statements are the only ones that appeared in the TV ad:

“This year every American child gets an investment account. Millions will be pre-funded. That’s free money. We can all experience the American Dream.”

That left me with the impression that EVERY American child automatically receives a $1,000 contribution, but that isn’t true. Only children born between January 1, 2025 and December, 31 2028 are eligible. It IS true that older American children, under 18, can register for a Trump account, but they won’t get the $1000 from the government. If they choose to open an account, deposits will have to come from parents, relatives and others.

When this administration calls this “free money”, I beg to differ. By all accounts, this is being financed with public money — OUR tax dollars.

Macon Sense classifieds for sale, rentals, legal, fundraisers, church events, yard sales, VBS.

It’s important to know that this money will be invested in a U.S. stock index fund and the value of the account will rise or fall with the market. Account rules and regulations are unclear. Tax and withdrawal rules are also unclear.

Be cautious. Information coming from this administration can be confusing, misleading and/or dishonest.
