The Macon County Democratic Party is proud to highlight their participation in a national effort, called Dems Work (https://dems.work/), to help neighbors confront the high cost of health care in America.
The initiative members believe people shouldn’t go into debt for getting sick. They say that in places like Macon County, that outcome is far too familiar. The national campaign shared stories and raised money to relieve medical debt for families in counties like Macon County, all across the state.
“We have seen our neighbors and friends struggling to meet their bills, pay for housing, and have enough food for their tables. That’s why this effort matters here,” said Betsy Baste, chair of the Macon County Democratic Party. “We hope this project has helped some families reduce those financial burdens.”
The Macon County Democratic Party raised $1,645 to donate to relieve crippling medical debt for pennies on the dollar. That number, through partnerships that the county party secured, was able to be tripled and expand the impact of the medical debt relief in North Carolina. We anticipate the money we raised to have at least a 100:1 ratio of debt relieved to dollars raised, equaling at least $329,000 towards medical debt relief in WNC.
“If you have been helped by this program, we hope you share your story with others,” said Baste. “All recipients are anonymous to us and to the donors.” They can share it here: https://dems.work/tell-my-story
Alongside the goal of debt relief itself, the program supports authentic storytelling from community members affected by medical debt and our broken healthcare system and those stories are being amplified across the county by our partners.
