Gary Allen Wilson: 1945 - 2026

Gary Allen Wilson, 80, of Franklin, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 21, 2026.

Born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Gary was the son of the late Ellis and Gladys Howerton Wilson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jerry Don Wilson and Bob Wilson. After serving his Country for 7 years in the Army, he dedicated much of his life to public service, serving as Chief of Police for Newport, Arkansas, for more than 20 years before retiring. Following his law enforcement career, he moved to Thomasville, Georgia, where he worked in Loss Prevention for Walmart, as a supervisor, until his second retirement. Twenty years ago, Gary and his wife made Franklin their home.

Gary had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed spending his time hunting, fishing, boating, gardening, riding his ATV on the mountain where he lived, and simply appreciating God's creation. He was a faithful member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. He loved the Lord, his family, friends, and his church family with all his heart. Gary loved spending time with family and friends, telling funny stories about things that have happened in his life.

Gary will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and loyal friend. His kindness, strength, and love for family will be cherished by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Gretna DeWitt Wilson; his sons, Gary Allen Wilson, Jr. (Melissa), Jerry Wayne Wilson (Emily), and Heath Justin Wilson; his five grandchildren, Noah, Gabriella, Abigail, Kate, and Brynne.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29th, at Holly Springs Baptist Church. Rev. Ben Heise will officiate.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Prayer Group which meets every Saturday morning at Holly Springs Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Gideons International or Holly Springs Baptist Church.

Gary's legacy of service, faith, and love for the outdoors will live on in the hearts of his family and friends for generations to come.
