Here we are again with an opportunity for perfect, pithy and poignant words directed to a group of people that deserve the best. The 2026 graduating classes from college and high school.
But, you’re not going to get it from me. Not the perfect, pithy and poignant. I could try, but I’d rather honor someone who really did it well.
Last time, I celebrated Mother’s Day with an old poem from colonial days. Today, it’s country music and the commencement speech that won the internet this week.
First, a little reality
Suffice it to say, you have accomplished a great thing. You graduated. You finished something very tough, and something not everyone can do.
A lot of people graduate high school, but do not, under any circumstances, under appreciate what you’ve done. That goes for the parents too. It is not an easy accomplishment and you deserve praise and honor.
Less people graduate college. Again, an amazing accomplishment.
Now the fun part.
You’re all freshmen again. You’re either a freshman in college, or a freshman in life. It’s a new set of challenges, and fun. But, we’re not going down that rabbit hole.
I said no perfect, pithy or poignant words here. Not when someone has done it better. And Eric Church – the country singer, Appalachian State grad and lifelong UNC fan – did it better.
His perfect, pithy and poignant words are about what’s important in life. He uses an extended metaphor to compare his guitar’s six strings to his six pillars of life. It fits my three P’s pretty closely, and it’s hilariously entertaining too.
I especially love his words regarding community and social media. Parents and local leaders, I beg you to echo these words, thoughts and prayers (my word) often. It’s at 7:40 in the speech. Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t praise his words about marriage and values earlier in the speech. Could not have said it better, though I certainly could say more…and my wife would confirm that!
So, I won’t waste any more of your time reading my words, watch his instead.
TRIGGER WARNING: Of course, he is not a fan of NC State or Duke, and he lets you know it. Relax, it’s the bigger message that is important. Enjoy.
